Digital Audio Tape

The DAT cassette was developed at the end of the 1980s as a digital successor to the compact cassette in the consumer sector. However, it was never able to establish itself in the mass market. In the 1990s, however, DAT recorders were very popular in semi-professional and professional sound engineering due to their good technical features and price-performance ratio.

It records uncompressed PCM Audio in 48 kHz and 44.1 kHz at 16 bit and in Longplay mode in 32 kHz at 12 bit. The typical tape length is between 60 and 180 minutes.
